Nothing brings me greater joy than catalysing others to dance, move, be in their bodies
When I watched this amazing woman, Deborah Cohan, dancing so joyfully before her double mastectomy operation this morning I was so moved and felt the opening of my own heart to the powerful medicine of Dance as Healer. Thank you Deborah for reminding me that I always have a choice to be joyful and present in the face of chaos and the unknown. Blessings to you beautiful being, ecstatic teacher. A shower of roses over the magnificent body as you step through this threshold of healing.
Deborah Cohan, herself a doctor, danced with the medical team at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco minutes before undergoing surgery to have both breasts removed.
Dancing to Beyonce's Get Me Bodied with around a dozen hospital staff, the six-minute clip of the flashmob has been viewed over three million times since being posted on YouTube.
The mother-of-two went one step further as she asked her family, friends and colleagues to record their own impromptu dance videos in solidarity with her.
"I have visions of a healing video montage,” the obstetrician wrote on her CaringBridge web page. “Nothing brings me greater joy than catalysing others to dance, move, be in their bodies. Are you with me people?”
They duly responded, her colleagues at San Francisco General Hospital filmed themselves partying in a corridor and added a message that they were "sending healing energy".
